The talk will look at many examples of Thanet’s rich underground heritage including: the enigmatic Shell Grotto; air raid shelters from both world wars; underground chapels; and tunnels used by smugglers.


Rod will also take a detailed look at the chequered history of the Margate Caves and bring the story up to date with news of the Friends of Margate Caves’ plans for the future of this classic Margate attraction. All proceeds from the night will go to the Friends of Margate Caves, to assist with their fundraising.

The author of Underground Thanet, Rod is founder and principle Field Officer of the Kent Underground Research Group. He has more than 40 years’ experience in surveying and recording underground sites in Kent.


Doors open 6:30pm. Talk begins 7pm. Interval bar.
